Hello all!
I am Alexandria Burgess, I'm in my 5th and final year at Grand Valley. I will graduate with a major in Spanish and a minor in Psychology. I am currently placed at Hopkins High School in a Spanish classroom. I have a love for English Language Learners and Spanish Language Learners and I look forward to an exciting career with Spanish education. I do plan to pursue and English Second Language certification so that I am able to work with Spanish speaking students and help them learn English as well as teach Spanish. I love to study language acquisition as well, hence the psychology degree. I think I will never stop finding how the human mind learns a second language and first language to be a fascinating subject.
My Spanish language love also comes with a love for travel. I have spent time in Latin America experiencing their culture and immersing myself in the Spanish language. I recently returned from spending my summer in Spain, again immersed in the Spanish culture and traditions. Personally, I love every aspect of the Spanish language and culture and I'm excited to portray this language and culture to future students.
Some other interesting things or staples about myself is that I love the outdoors. I absolutely enjoy hiking and biking. In the winter skiing and snowboarding are some of my favorite things to do. I find a lot of joy in outdoor activities. I also have played volleyball for a good decade or more of my life and I coach currently. I coach for Michigan Volleyball Academy in East Grand Rapids. The video I have attached is of my literal 2 seconds of fame in their promotion video from a few years ago. I'm in a grey hoodie, with blonde hair in the background in the corner at seconds 31 and 32!
Looking back on the technology I have been exposed to, I attended a high school that incorporated SMARTboards into every classroom we had during my last 2 years. All of my teachers used their boards so I was able to see how the boards function and work in almost all classrooms. At Hopkins, they have StarBoards, which seem to be very similar boards and ELMO to display documents. I've see how the computer software works and the buttons for the projector so far. I have not designed anything beside seating charts yet but I'm excited to create a lesson plan that incorporates the technology we have available in our classroom. Additionally, Hopkins students all have personal laptops that they bring to class and can take home with them. I think these laptops are a great tool that can be utilized in our classroom.
I look forward to a semester of learning and working together!
That is so cool that you have been able to go to Latin AMerica and Spain to put your language skills to use! I only have taken up to 10th grade of Spanish, so I like to speak spanglish. I too have played volleyball for a long time, and almost took a 6th grade volleyball coaching position at my placement, but my schedule couldn't allow it (I was very bummed) Looking forward to meeting you!
ReplyDeleteI admire your love for travel and language. To me, this says that you are more interested in the people and places you don't know, and it exhibits a passion for learning. With this mindset, I think you'll make a great teacher! I too enjoy the outdoors and challenging myself with skiing in the winter. It's such a thrill! I am glad I have the opportunity to meet you in class, see you then!
ReplyDeleteI think it's great that you have been to Latin America! I would love to travel, though I've never been outside North America. I also love to see your passion for ESL learners, which will be a great asset as you begin your professional life as a teacher!
